If you’re looking for a relaxing, beach-side vacation where you can hang out and get a tan, then it’s best that you look somewhere else. Peru is a travel destination for the adventure seeker, the traveler that is looking to test their limits and experience ancient ruins, steep mountain climbs, pristine lakes, and humid jungles.
Don’t take this adventure lightly; if you take on the strenuous Inca Trail, then it’s important that you train before hand as it’s not as easy walk in the park. Furthermore, the high altitude of Cusco and Lake Titicaca are known to overwhelm travelers through headaches and nausea, so it’s important that you come prepared with the right medicine.
But don’t get scared away: we’ve seen 60-year men and women finish the Inca Trail with a smile on their face. It’s all about preparing well and partnering with a travel agency that can accommodate your needs and physical fitness levels.
No matter what, there is a travel package that is perfect for your needs. Throughout my travels in Peru, I learned that it’s not about the destination, but rather, it’s about the journey and the amazing experiences along the way. Get ready for the adventure of a lifetime!
I’ll admit that at first glance Lima, Peru is not the most attractive city in the world. Step off the plane and you’ll immediately notice the smog and chaotic nature of the city. The majority of travelers skip Lima and instantly go to Cusco, the Amazon, or Lake Titicaca. But don’t make that mistake as there is an abundance of beautiful history and delicious restaurants to experience.

Cusco is the ancient capitol of the Incan civilization. Keep in mind that the city is 3,399 meters (11,152 feet) above sea level, so make sure that you bring altitude medicine to help you adjust to the altitude. Cusco contains beautiful cathedrals and many restaurants in the Plaza de Armas where you can try cui, the Peruvian guinea pig that is quite popular amongst tourists. We recommend that you stay at least 24 hours in Cusco to adjust to the altitude and take a tour around the city.

The Inca Trail is the most famous hike in the world. The hike starts in Ollantaytambo and ends at Intipuncu (the Sun Gate) which overlooks Machu Picchu. The traditional Inca Trail is a 4-day/3-night adventure, but there are now many different options including a 2-day/1-night hike.
If you love outdoor hikes and are adventurous, then the Inca Trail is an absolute must. It’s a life-changing experience that will take your breath away.

Machu Picchu is one of the 7 wonders of the world. While Cusco was the capitol of the Incan civilization, Machu Picchu was the religious heart of the empire where they worshipped their gods and spirits. The name “Machu Picchu” means “Old Mountain”.
If this is your first trip to Peru, then Machu Picchu is an absolute must. Even if you don’t do the Inca Trail, Machu Picchu contains enough hikes and archeological sites to entertain and amaze any traveler.

Lake Titicaca is a beautiful navy blue lake that seems untouched by the outside world. The most popular islands for tourists to visit are Uros, Amantani, and Taquile. The majority of travelers couple Machu Picchu with Lake Titicaca, as there is a convenient bus ride from Cusco to Lake Titicaca that travel agencies bundle into their packages. Lake Titicaca is a unique experience as you’ll stay in the house of a local and experience the culture first-hand.

The Amazon experience is a stark contrast to Cusco and Lake Tititcaca. While Cusco is high up in the mountains and has a dry feel, the Amazon is a humid, mosquito-filled jungle. Travelers of all ages will find relaxation or adventure in the Amazon: the majority of agencies customize itineraries for their travelers once they arrive at the lodge. Their are many activities to experience such as zip-lining, fishing, bird watching, and trekking across the jungle and villages.
