Lake Titicaca is the largest lake in South America and this beautiful area is definitely worth a visit. While 60% of the lake is in Peru, the other 40% is in Bolivia. When you go to this region, you should be well aware of the elevation since it is 3800 meters above see level. The lake is about 122 miles long and has an average width of 35 miles! This is the ancestral land of the Quechas as well as other cultures. Since this was always a very fertile area, various kingdoms grew out of this region. Supposedly the first Incan king, Manco Capac was born there.
The best way to get to the Lake Titicaca area is to take a train from Cusco. This gorgeous ride is an attraction in and of itself, as it has unforgettable views of waterfalls and landscapes. You will travel through elevations as high as 4300 meters.
The town on the Peruvian side of the lake is Puno. If you go to the Bolivian town on the shore of Lake Titicaca you will be in Copacabana. There is no airport to get you directly to Puno. The nearest airport is Manco Capac airport in Juliaca, which is about 45 minutes from Puno. You can also take the bus to Puno from Arequipa, Cusco or Lima.
There are a variety of places to stay in Puno. This city is actually the capital of Peruvian folklore and depending on the time of year, you may get a chance to experience some folklore festivals!
A good choice for a place to stay is the Libertador Lake Titicaca, which is walking distance from the lake. You can see lake views from your window.
If you can spend a decent amount of money, go for Casa Andina Private Collection Isla Suasi. This hotel is actually on its own small private island, and offers luxury accommodations. If you are traveling for a romantic getaway or feel like splurging, this hotel is a good bet.
When you are in this region, you will be able to enjoy a variety of islands like Taquile and Amantani and Suasi. You can even do a homestay on one of these islands to get some of the local flavor. The quaint villages on the shores of the islands have attractions to explore like pre-Inca ancient ruins and churches.
Another interesting thing to see is the Uros Islands, which are 42 man made islets. This is an amazing site to see, as the people use the totora plant, to make their homes, furniture and much more. I have noticed that some families have solar panels on their homes to run electricity.
The lake trout is all of the rage in Lake Titicaca! Obviously, it makes sense to sample something from the lake. All the best restaurants are on Avenida 6 de Agosto. You can find lots of trout and also pasta and pizza.
Some good choices include Mojsa Restaurant in Puno, which has great wine, and food cooked in wood-fired oven. Also Alma Cocina Viva is considered one of the best restaurants in Puno. This upscale restaurant serves creative Peruvian food.
You might consider booking a tour to take you through the various islands. You can find tours leaving from Puno that visit Uros, Amantani and Taquile.If you want some very intense memories, try mountain trekking or mountain biking the highways. Also simply kayaking on the beautiful water will let you explore and enjoy this amazing part of Peru. Don’t expect to enjoy swimming through, as this lake is freezing due to its high altitude.
One word of warning: some people will get headaches due to the elevation. Consider visiting this area after having already been at high elevations like in Cusco. Also be sure to stay hydrated.
